Chemex Handblown Coffeemaker

Simple to use and appealing to look at, the Chemex Coffeemaker produces some of the best coffee you’ll ever make. 

Blending both form and function, the Chemex is as visually appealing as well, constructed of wood, laboratory-grade borosilicate glass and a thin leather band. Best of all, it brews a perfect cup of pure flavorful coffee with no bitter aftertaste, sediment, or contact with plastic – all while working without electricity or moving parts.

Hand-blown in Croatia, the Chemex Coffeemaker is a wonderful example of fine craftsmanship and durability. Chemically resistant and able to handle extreme temperatures, borosilicate glass is in standard use, not only in your kitchen, but in scientific laboratories throughout the world.

Invented in 1941 by German-born chemist Peter J. Schlumbohm, the Chemex Coffeemaker was designed with the science of heat in mind. In 1956, it was selected by the Illinois Institute of Technology as one of the best designed products of the modern era. utilizes laboratory-grade glass and a scientist’s knowledge of heat and chemical reaction. It has also earned a place in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian, the Corning Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Unfold one Chemex natural fiber filter into a cone shape. Place it into the top of the carafe with the three-layered side of the filter facing the spout.

Pour one rounded tablespoon of coffee per 5 oz. cup into the filter. (If stronger coffee is preferred, use more; the Chemex method will not produce any bitterness). NOTE: Use regular or automatic grind (medium to coarse ground) coffee only.

When water is boiling, remove it from heat and let it cool for a few seconds. (It should now be about 200ºF, the perfect brewing temperature). Holding the wooden ring, pour a small amount over the grounds, just enough without causing them to float. (This small but important step produces "bloom," allowing the nuanced taste of the coffee to be released.)

After wetting the grounds, add more water, soaking them each time, alway keeping the water level well below the top of the carafe. Dispose of the spent grounds by lifting the filter out of the coffeemaker. That's it – you are now ready to enjoy a perfect cup of coffee!

The wood collar should be removed before cleaning the coffeemaker. Handle the Chemex as you would any hand-blown glass – with gentle hand-washing and extra care. If you insist on placing it in the dishwasher, be sure be careful not to allow it to knock against anything.

Washing the coffeemaker by hand is encouraged – using dishwasher detergent in the carafe and filling with hot water. Put the Chemex aside for 15 minutes or so, depending on how much has accumulated in the carafe. Swish with a brush and rinse.

The Chemex coffeemaker will last for hundreds of years, so long as you don’t drop it. The coffeemaker is made out of borosilicate glass, wood and leather. It is hand-blown in Croatia and comes to the US via the high seas.
