Solid
with the rich texture of wood, the pack basket is also surprisingly
lightweight. Adjustable wide cotton straps lets you carry the basket
comfortably on your back, leaving your hands free to ride a bike or eat
an ice cream cone.
The
hard sides keep juicy tomatoes from getting smashed or
picnic sandwiches from flattening. Great to take to the farmer's market, foraging, on a
canoe trip or any other wholesome activity where free hands and toting
capacity is needed.
Rattan
is lighter per square inch than even a good canvas. The bottom of the
basket is reinforced and fitted with an ash wood runner so it stands up
squarely. A leather handle is fitted along the top.

Medium-sized basket.
Rattan
can be wet during a river trip or at the beach without undermining the
basket's rigidity or causing long-term damage. Remember, though, that
it’s made of dried plant, so constant moisture and humidity will
eventually cause the fibers to mildew. Store the basket in a dry place
and let it dry completely if it does get wet.
Clean off surface dirt with a damp towel. For dirt that's really
worked its way into the weaving, use a stiff brush to scrub it off.
Rattan has the potential to be grown and harvested sustainably. As
a climbing palm, rattan winds it’s way into the existing
structure of a forest without harming the balance. A rattan plant
growing around a tropical tree can yield more material and fetch a
better price than the timber it is wrapped around, saving forest growth, and most rattan species can be harvested without killing off the whole plant. it even grows in degraded and marginal soil, opening up options
for the communities that rely on the billion-dollar global trade in
rattan for their bread and butter.
However, the sustainability in growth and harvesting of rattan is uneven at best. The World Wildlife Fund is working on increasing the number of harvesters who gather rattan in a way that maintains economic livelihoods while minimizing long-term environmental damage. So far, only a small percentage of harvesters have signed on to the agreement.
The rattan peel used in the harvest basket is sourced from Malaysia and the ash wood comes from the U.S.
