Each block is one of a kind, hewn from a single piece of Oregon black walnut, a strong, durable, true heartwood. The wood comes from saw mill ends or furniture shop scraps or even from trees culled by the city of Portland. If not saved from the scrap heap, much of the wood would otherwise be destined for making presto logs.

The blocks are cut and finished by hand, one at a time. The rubber feet, screwed securely into the base, prevent slippage and offer stability. The stand is polished and sealed with two coats of Skidmore's beeswax and linseed oil finish to enhance the wood’s grain and patina and to protect it from moisture.

A prime cut of Oregon wood via Block & Sons Co.

Use & Care

Unfinished hardwood keeps water out pretty well on its own, and the block has two coats of wood finish on it. If you spill something, wipe it off with a dry cloth. If the block is frequently exposed to a lot of moisture, you might give it a light application of wood finish with a clean cloth once a year.

Production & Design

Block and Sons Co. was started by Dirk Frewing and John Skelton. The company and its figurative head, C. Everett Block, a creation of the founders, are a tribute to the loggers and logging history of Oregon. A Spanish teacher, Frewing grew up with a handy grandfather, is a tinkerer himself, and has spent many summers working for contractors. He noticed that his wife would lay her iPad on the counter in puddles of water and thought there had to be a better solution than what was out there. He and Skelton liked the contrast of Mother Nature’s beautifully imperfect engineering with the sleekly perfect tech devices, and wanted to create something that would endure. Their company sources only scrap and sustainably harvested wood.
