Don’t let the porcelain-white surface and delicately placed holes fool you — this colander can take the heat of a thousand boiling pots of pasta water. It just means it’s also charming enough to serve a freshly washed bowl of cherries. A long, hollow handle keeps the heat off your hands, and a hook on the other end lets you suspend the colander on the lip of a pot until every last drop has drained.

The colander is also available as part of a set with the white soup ladle and the slotted ladle.

This colander is made in Austria by a company with roots going back to the year 1550, and they’ve been specializing in porcelain enamel for the past 80 years. Porcelain enamel is made from glass and steel — so it’s shiny and unbreakable. The smooth surface is easy to clean, and doesn’t leech any harmful chemicals, like BPA in plastic.

The company that makes this colander strives to produce their enamelware with a minimum of energy waste. They have their own hydroelectric power stations, reuse generated heat three times over, and are working toward fuel oil-independence.

Use & Care

No need to polish or treat this carefully, the porcelain enamel can withstand heat, weight, moisture or any other force a colander will come across.

Safe in the dishwasher, but the smooth surface makes it easy to clean for the hand washers among us.

Production & Design

Only natural, abundantly available raw materials are used for enameling this colander (namely: glass, a potassium compound and metal oxide).

To carry out the high-heat enameling of their products, the company constructed three of their own hydroelectric power stations that allow them to use 100% green electricity. This saves 4,600 tons of carbon dioxide and 3.6 tons of sulfur oxide and sulfur dioxide from ever being made and released into our air. The construction of their drying and burning facilities allows them to use and reuse the heat they generate for three different purposes. They’re excited about residual heat and are working towards the day when they are completely independent from fuel oil.

This colander will last you a lifetime, but just in case you get into a terrible fight with it, it is 100% recyclable.
