Designed for the dignified wet shaver who tends to keep their safety razor on the edge of the sink, or tossed in a Dopp Kit, the razor sheath keeps the blade from developing rust from exposure to air, and protects the blade if the razor should get knocked to the floor.
The leather used for this particular sheath is no run of the mill stuff. It comes from the highest graded areas of reserve leather sides from a 130 year old Midwestern tannery that utilizes unbranded male cattle hides raised by American ranchers – a type of leather available in less than 1% of all available hides.
Each leather piece begins with salt-cured full-grain vegetable tanned cattle hide, organically treated in the absence of artificial colors or chemicals. The leather is then soaked in tanning liquor derived from oak bark for six weeks and then dried for several days. This process yields leather that, while extremely durable, and because of collagen that darkens when exposed to sunlight, will develop a rich caramel patina with age.
Each article is then hand cut, hand conditioned with beeswax and hand stitched using a heavy thread.
Because of the natural quality of the leather, natural markings are to be expected, and an occasional range scar.
The sheath shouldn’t require much care because of its natural properties, but if you want to shine it up, apply a little leather oil to restore luster.
The manufacturer developed his appreciation for vegetable-tanned leather more than 25 years ago with the creation of a case for hair shears.
Raised in Northern Minnesota and today based in Cottage Grove Wisconsin, he is a classically trained barber turned leather artisan who subscribes to the credo “pure leather done simply.”
