Faster than a sieve and longer-lasting than a food processor, a traditional Italian passaverdura, or food mill, is used to make everything from apple sauce to tomato soup. Made by Stella, a small italian workshop specializing in stainless steel kitchen tools, the official name for this is literally "Indistruttibile," Italian for indestructable. Needless to say, the steel is thick, and the welds are solid. It will last a lifetime and then some.

Each piece is constructed of stainless steel and nothing else. Lacking the plethora of gimmicks attributed to most modern kitchen wares, the main features of the Stella food mill are the fluted handles and ribbed bowl that serve to strengthen the structure of the piece, creating a more beautiful and longer-lasting tool.

Use & Care

Can easily be dismantled for cleaning, or for switching out any of the three filters. The fine filter is ideal for preparing purees and jellies, the medium filter for vegetable soups and fruit sauces, and the coarse filter for chunky sauces and chopping mozzarella. Food mills are meant to process soft foods, so we don’t recommend chopping nuts or anything else hard.

For cleaning, wash with soap and water. Lifetime warranty.

Production & Design
Stella got their start in 1924 when Italy was in the middle of an economic downturn. Gino Sgarbi and his buisiness parter Girolamo Chiozzi made a name for themselves by producing quality wares during a time when widespread political strife compromised production standards across Europe.  Gino Sgarbi passed on what was lovingly called “the factory” to his son Abdon, who after working for eighty years, passed it on to his daughter Marina. To guarantee quality, Marina doesn’t make strict production deadlines, ensuring that no piece is leaves the factory without all the attention it deserves.

The factory is in the same region that produces pedigreed Parmesan cheese, balsamic vinegar, and lambrusco. Accordingly, each piece in Stella's line marked with quality. Constructed of stainless steel and nothing else, each piece is stamped from plate steel by a crew of twelve craftsmen who possess the know-how to make every Stella product from start to finish. The same people who fabricate the products, also have a hand in product design, where a tradition of quality control consists of impassioned arguments over this or that being moved half a centimeter one way or the other. The Italians... gotta love 'em.
