This colander looks delicate, but under a white enamel skin is a body of tough Austrian steel. Enamelware combines the best qualities of steel and glass. This colander is as durable as any stainless steel kitchen implement, yet retains the graceful, heat resistant and easy to clean surface of porcelain. It has a round bottom, but rather than welding on separate feet to keep it stable, the feet are made by further stamping out the underside of the bowl. A durable and subtle solution.

Made in Austria by a company with roots going back to 1550 (around the time when, among other medieval shenanigans, Nostradamus published his first almanac), the company has for the past eighty years specialized in porcelain enamel, stamping each piece of steel to exacting specifications.

Porcelain enamel is made from glass and steel — so it’s shiny and unbreakable. The smooth surface is easy to clean, and doesn’t leech harmful chemicals like plastic kitchen tools and non-stick pans.

The company that makes this colander strives to produce their enamelware with a minimum of energy waste. They have their own hydroelectric power stations, reuse generated heat three times over, and are working toward total fuel oil independence.

Use & Care

The porcelain enamel can withstand heat, weight, moisture or any other element a colander will come across. It’s totally safe in the dishwasher but just as easy to wash by hand. Built for straining boiling liquid from pasta or veggies. Just don’t put it in the microwave.

Production & Design

To carry out the high-heat enameling, the Austrian company uses 100 percent renewable power. The colanders are made at 1500°C, having built three of their own hydroelectric power stations that allow them to use only green electricity. This saves 4,600 tons of carbon dioxide and 3.6 tons of sulfur oxide and sulfur dioxide from ever being created and released into the atmosphere. The construction of their drying and burning facilities also allows them to use and reuse the heat they generate for three different purposes.

And although you’ll never want to throw one away, it’s nice to know that they’re 100 percent recyclable.
