Someone – probably an utter let-down of a husband – once said you can have either romance or utilitarianism, not both. But this pot scrubber shows that it needn’t be this way. This is so well crafted, it almost seems a shame to expose it to the remains of last night’s roast. That, however, is exactly what it does best. The natural bristles are so ruthlessly efficient and the beech wood handle so tactile, that you might even start looking forward to the next scrub.
Add to that the story behind their manufacture — a German cooperative of design students and the traditional craftsmen of the Berlin Institute for the Blind — and you have quite the talking point.
Tough plant fibers (in this case Union, a mixture of agave and bassine) are pulled through the wood handle using bronze wire. So effective is this technique, that the wood would have to disintegrate before you lose a bristle. And with hard beech wood used for the handle, that’s not something you’ll have to worry about for a long, long time.

The pot scrubber needs no special care. The natural bristles are durable and were chosen because they hold up even when soaked in grease and water and the beech wood handle is hard-wearing. Giving the brush a good hard rinse immediately after use is the easiest way to keep it clean.
In 1998, a lecturer at the Potsdam Design School, Hermann Weizenegger, and his fellow designer Oliver Vogt first conceived the notion of a “project for the imaginary factory,” pairing the honed brush and basket-making skills of patients from the Blindenanstalt von Berlin with the vision of young design students.
The bristles are sourced from Mexico, and the beech wood from the forests of southern Germany and the Czech Republic.
