Exclusive to KM, this dog leash was made by a craftsman who apprenticed in traditional saddle and harness making and has over 40 years of experience in leatherworking. He cuts and finishes each piece by hand. These leashes are made from latigo leather that is vegetable tanned, a millenia-old process that uses the tannins derived from the bark, nuts, leaves, and wood of trees such as oak or chestnut to soften and preserve animal hides. It has significantly less environmental impact than the modern, more conventional process of chromium tanning, and produces sturdy, durable leather that develops a handsome patina over time. Latigo is a very strong harness leather with no impregnated toxins or heavy metals to come into contact with your dog.

The brown leather leash has solid brass hardware, the black has stainless steel. Each leash is hand stamped with the maker’s mark.

Use & Care

To keep the leather supple and nourished, rub in a protective leather conditioner once or twice a year. You can also use a bit of the leather conditioner and a soft cloth to clean off surface dirt.

Production & Design

Dennis began working with leather straight out of high school in 1971 when he got an apprenticeship in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, making saddles and harnesses using traditional methods. After a few years, he operated his own store in a Civil War-era village in Ohio. In 2003, he opened River Ridge Leather in Ohio’s historic Roscoe Village.

He buys sides of steers that are vegetable tanned and uses a knife called a strap cutter to cut each piece by hand. With a beveller, he takes the corners off the edges, finishes them with edge coat, and then burnishes them by compressing them.
