Silver Brass Metropolitan Whistle

This high decibel silver brass whistle carries up to a mile and looks sleek with an ingenious one-piece hands-free design. Designed in England in the 1800s when the police rattle became a relic.  Made and manufactured by the oldest whistle company in England.

Some people would recommend that you carry a whistle with you at all times. The uses are hundreds: safety, refereeing, volunteering, hiking, issuing and responding to distress signals. You can take it on a trip, into the forest, or onto the stage. Put it in your pocket or with your keys for those times when having something around your neck just doesn’t work.  

Way back in 1860, a Birmingham-trained toolmaker converted his humble washroom at St. Mark’s Square into a workshop. Here he did everything he could think of to supplement the family income, from watch repairing to cobbling shoes. He also made whistles, which he saw as an opportunity for a flourishing business when Scottland Yard was in the market for a replacement for their rattles.  

It was by accident that the toolmaker discovered the high-pitched sound that could be heard well above the commotion of a crowd, and it was when he tried to place his violin on the shelf but missed. It fell to the floor and broke, and the breaking of the strings – that jarring, discordant sound of each string popping apart – inspired him to work the whistle until it matched the sound. When the police force tested the whistle, they found it could carry the distance of a mile.
