The appeal of this pen case is its complete lack of frills — it feel heavy in the hand with the darkening finish of pure, solid brass. This is the antithesis of all those cheap pencil cases from the 80s and 90s that were big on compartments and cartoons in lurid colors, but low on durability and class.

Because brass ages well, as soon as you start using it, the pen case becomes ever different to the rest of the batch from which it came, adding to you case's particular charm.

Like the rest of Midori’s stationery, this item means to stay in business for at least as long as you do. It’ll hold pens, pencils and anything else that fits within the 17 cm x 4.75 cm x 2 cm dimensions. A stiff indent-snap mechanism keeps the lid on, so you can carry a bit of stately desk with you in your bag.

Use & Care

This case is a long-term desktop tool. It will, of course, grow smudged and darken, but each scratch and tonal blemish is part of a process of maturation, an evolution of character unique to your desk.

You can leave the scratches and oxidation for character. Brass is a natural germicidal, so this pen case basically cleans itself (at least on the microbial level, if you drop spaghetti sauce on it, you'll have to wipe it off). But if you’re a helpless cleaning compulsive, unimpressed by the characteristics of aging brass, you can give it a gentle rub using a dry cloth with a small amount of metal polish.

Production & Design

The Japanese stationer who produces this case has been making solid, made-to-last office tools since 1950. They have consistently turned out clean, sophisticated designs, combining beauty and functionality in equal measures. The pen case is no exception. Manufactured from 100% pure brass in their Japan factory, it uses a simple, classic indent snap mechanism to keep the lid and case together when closed.
