In the old days, wallets like these were used as banks. It will still fit a thick stack of fresh $50 bills, or you can slide in your phone and keys, and keep your bank cards in the two flat pockets. The wallet fits a lot, but Postalco doesn’t make
anything bulky — this wallet is made with
utilitarian purpose and a clean aesthetic.
Made of deerskin, the wallet is very soft to the touch, but tough — deerskin is so strong, it was used to link together the metal plates of samurai armor. The deerskin Postalco uses for
this wallet is vegetable tanned, with a smooth, lightly pebbly surface that helps absorb and disguise the tiny scrapes that come from everyday use. Lined patterns at the corners are heat-embossed
then hand painted at Postalco’s studio in Tokyo.
The wallet zips open and has an ample main compartment, a flat pocket for bills, two oversized card pockets, and a smaller zippered pocket for coins, more cards and random receipts or notes.
At
7.9 inches wide and 3.5 inches tall, you don’t throw this one into
the back pocket of your tightest jeans, but it can be tossed into a bag
or clutched in your hand.
Comes in navy blue or dark red. Since these are hand-painted, colors may vary a bit from piece to piece.
Postalco uses naturally cured and tanned leather. Like all leather, avoid getting it wet. If this happens, pat (don't rub!) the wallet down with a soft cloth and leave it to dry in the shade.
The leather is already treated, so there's no need to apply extra leather conditioner.
The leather's surface means those inevitable scrapes and surface wear that come with everyday use will blend into the texture and become part of the wallet's unique patina. To help scratches blend into the leather, take a very slightly moistened cloth and pat it over the entire surface.
Postalco chose deerskin for its softness, strength and texture. Deerskin leather was used for clothing by American explorers and mountain men who needed clothes that didn't tatter in the woods. Its flexible strength also made it popular among the Japanese warrior class for bows and arrows, and to link together pieces of samurai armor.
Mike
and Yuri — the pair behind Postalco — work closely with the craftsmen who make their products,
discussing every stitch and fold. And at the core of
their designs is a deep respect for the skill of the workers — Mike
insists that the understated and precise construction of Postalco’s
paper and leather goods are of a caliber that can only be made in Japan.
