The zipper cuts a dash through the leather of this pen case, emphasizing its classic feel. The zipper itself, made by Waldes, is a strong, brassy number that recalls the earliest clasp locks, with its big teeth and sturdy aesthetic.
It might not look too unfamiliar to a certain Elias Howe, who invented the sewing machine in 1851. The latter turned out to be a successful distraction from Howe's former pursuit – coming up with a working clothes fastener that didn’t rely on buttons. Howe was close to becoming the “Father of the Zipper,” but in the end that honor went to Whitcomb Jackson, whose 1893 patent was the first to get to market (although his tricky hook and eye device did not use the word “zipper”).
Whitcomb’s product debuted at the Chicago World’s Fair, but met with little commercial success. It took one Gideon Sundback to increase the number of teeth from four to ten per inch. This entrepreneurial instinct ensured that within a year of starting production, Sundback's machine was producing several hundred feet of zipper each day. His 1917 patent was taken up by suppliers of military boots and clothing. The newly-named “zipper” finally overtook the button in popularity during the 1930s, with designers espousing its virtues wholeheartedly, promising an end to the “possibility of unintentional and embarrassing disarray” in gentleman’s clothing.
This is the newest addition to Roberu’s fine line of leather goods, and part of their Spring/Summer Collection for 2012. The cases come in four colors: tan, bordeaux, navy, and red.
The cases will last for years as part of a travel or home stationery kit. As with any premium leather good, it’s unwise to allow them prolonged exposure to water or heat.
Leather Factory Roberu has been crafting leather goods using natural tannins for four years. All skins are steeped in a proprietary tanning solution using only vegetable-derived tannins. They are then dried, cut to spec, and crafted into Roberu's signature goods. Made in Yokohama.
