Six-Sided Metal Ruler

Measure twice, cut once. This six-sided aluminum ruler lets you do it in metric and imperial. We’ve put inches and centimeters on one scale for a clearer eye on proportions and easy conversions.

Another side has the 0 at the exact middle of the scale, for measuring out the center without having to flip and fumble the ruler. The remaining four sides have more standard measures. One is marked out in centimeters, and three of them in inches, divided into scales. 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16 lets you scale measurements with accurate proportions — it’s a tool borrowed from architects and cartographers but will also help you keep things precisely measured.

For accuracy and longevity, the material of a ruler has to be dimensionally stable and durable. This ruler is made of solid aluminum, so there’s no warping or reacting to heat and cold — the measure will always be right.

The aluminum has a nice weight and stature, and an understated finish.

Different scales make measuring clearer and more accurate. Use the zero-at-center measure to hang up picture frames or measure out the middle of the paper — great for drawing and sign-writing.

The 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16 refers to its measurement in feet, and lets you make scale drawings and mock-ups. To use this, figure out the scale that you want to work with and stick to it. If you choose 1/8 inch to represent a foot, and your couch (for example) is six feet long, then use six 1/8 inch measures to make the tiny, scaled drawing of your couch on paper. Hours of fun to be had there.

This ruler is made in Germany by a company that’s been quietly manufacturing technical office tools since 1911.

This is based on the classic architect’s scale ruler, but with some modern modifications for what we found we needed. Constantly flipping rulers and consulting conversion calculators was getting cumbersome, so we had them print both inches and centimeters on one scale. This will be infinitely handy until the day the world switches forever and always to metric units.
