Pewter Foxhead Measuring Jigger

The business of mixing drinks is not what it used to be. Cocktails today seem diluted (many a bartender will use one ounce, instead of one jigger, of liquor) filled to the brim with soda or sweetened juice, and decorated with a wedge of lopsided citrus on the side, as if to make up for the whole fiasco. An average bartender, these days, seems better suited for a non-discerning college student than the seasoned drinker. But it doesn't have to be that way at your house.

The fox head cocktail measuring cup is made from solid hand cast pewter, with a polished cup fit for any engraving. It stands up on its own as you fill it with your elixir of choice, one or two shots depending on the occasion. The solid, heavy material and classic design hail from a time when the famous and the men-about-town could get falling down drunk, wake with killing headaches and lose not a shred of their polish; when bartenders were not merely puttering around behind the bar, but innovators who put their personal signature on the cocktails they procured. The pewter jigger belongs in the bar of a person who believes the elegant places are also the drinking places.  

Wash by hand in hot soapy water and dry with a soft cloth. Pewter will keep its shiny finish with minimum care. If it does start to dull, rub it with a bit of standard metal polish prior to washing. Clean in straight line strokes (not circular).

Arthur Richard Wentworth, a pewtersmith, founded the company in 1949. Because pewter is part of Sheffield’s steel-making heritage, these jiggers are stamped with seals of authenticity and association: the coat of arms of Sheffield, minimum tin content (92%), the Pewter Craftsmen trade guild stamp, a European Union authentication stamp and Wentworth’s initials.
