Since even before the Caran D’Ache factory opened its doors, the company’s reason for being has been the mechanical pencil. The company’s name is taken from a satirical cartoonist whose nom de plume was a French transliteration of the Russian word for pencil – karandash.
The factory opened in 1929 with their invention of the first all-metal clutch pencil. The mechanical pencil has evolved over the past eight decades, and Caran D’Ache has worked to keep theirs a vision of perfect functionality and design.
The Caran D’Ache mechanical pencil is still beloved by writers and illustrators.
The hexagonal body of the pencil holds nicely in the hand. It fits into your fingers and is neither too heavy nor too light. The silver plating gives the pencil an eternally modern look. Coated in rhodium, a rare noble metal that never tarnishes, the pencil will never become dark and spotty. The interlocking engraving is hand-turned using the guilloche technique, replicating a design Caran D’Ache has been using since 1953.
As with all of Caran D’Ache’s writing instruments, the beauty is underscored by unflagging utility. Specialty craftsmen and precision machines build each pencil’s ratchet mechanism for consistency and endurance.
The body of the pencil is made to last. It doesn’t need to be treated gently or polished. The pencil refills with standard, medium-fine, 0.7mm lead. HB leads are available from Kaufmann Mercantile in the Caran D’Ache refills listing.
The body of the pencil is named after the original Ecridor pencil factory acquired by Caran d’Ache founder, Arnold Schweitzer in 1924. Variations on the design has been made by the company since they first came up with it in 1930.
So beloved is the design of this line of pens and pencils, that in 1947, when very little was being made that wasn’t for the war effort, Caran d’Ache Ecridor the Ecridor was selected by the officers of the U.S. Army Headquarters in Germany. Caran d’Ache made an initial run of a thousand pens, before finally going into series production in 1953.
All pens are made entirely at the Caran d’Ache factory in Geneva, Switzerland.
