Handwoven Picnic Basket
Handwoven Appalachian white ash picnic basket with split lid and two handles. Waxed canvas lined interior. Solid brass nails and hardware. Measures approximately 18"L x 12"W x 9"H. Made in New Hampshire. (
This basket is woven from strips of Appalachian white ash, the wood of choice for almost all baseball bats, boats and furniture due to its relative hardness and strength. The wood strips, handles and lid are secured with solid brass nails and hardware. Brass contains no iron and therefore never rusts, so you can be assured a rustproof picnic experience.
Two handles allow for toting and mobility, and swing down to provide unfettered access to the lid once you’ve found your picnic spot. The twin split lid is hinged in the middle and opens on both sides, so hungry picnickers can access sandwiches and salads from every direction.
Use & Care
To clean the basket, use a soft, lint-free cloth dampened in a mild solution of warm water and gentle, oil-based wood soap. Polish and renew with our Beeswax Wood Care and Finish.
Production & Design
This New Hampshire family-run company has been making handwoven baskets, including market baskets, laundry baskets, bike baskets, trash baskets and more, since 1854. The making of this picnic basket begins with the harvest of Appalachian white ash wood from neighboring Northeastern states such as Vermont as well as local wood from New Hampshire. The wood is cut into strips for the baskets, lid panels and handle pieces. After cutting, the wood is sanded to remove sharp edges and snags.
The wood pieces are woven on a mold to create the right shape. They are left to rest overnight to allow for natural wood shrinkage. The next day, the basket is put in a steam boiler so that the wood becomes pliable and does not crack as the basketmaker nails in the hoop (which forms the upper rim of the basket) and the handles and secures the hinges of the twin split lid. Inspectors observe the entire process, handling and touching the basket along the way to ensure that you have a splinter-free picnic.
