Hewn from New England Ash trees by a 150 year old basket company. Suede leather handles attached with rivets offer added strength. Available in three nesting sizes for easy storage. Made in New Hampshire. Set of 3 ships free. (
The beauty of a basket is in its versatility and utility. This picking basket, well-built for the garden's bounty, is an accoutrement to be used anywhere. Fill with laundry, magazines, grain or outdoor gear. The strong ash wood, tight construction of the weave, and riveted handles will hold whatever you're schlepping.
Use & Care
Fill with bushels of apples, zucchini and lettuce from the garden, or corn freshly husked in the yard. Treat the baskets as storage for belongings. They're useful year-round, and the set of three nest for easy storage.
To care for the baskets should they start to look dirty or dry, you can gently wash with soap and water and then wipe dry. Linseed oil will restore luster if the wood looks brittle.
Production & Design
For over a century, these picking baskets have been produced in the scenic town of Peterborough, New Hampshire, in the shadow of Mt. Monadnock. The company who makes them dates back to 1841, when Amzi Childs came to Peterborough from Massachusetts to work in lead pipe manufacturing, and started weaving baskets on the side. His baskets became so popular he expanded his business under guidance of Henry Needham, "the dean of the basket making industry in Petersborough." In the hundred years since then, the factory has burned twice, merged and become incorporated, and currently operates in the same building it's been in since 1926.
The baskets start out as raw ash from the New England ash tree that grows in hydric soil and low altitude forests. Ash logs are fed through a planer to reduce the thickness and give each piece of wood a smooth surface suitable for weaving. The wood is then put into water to soften it, and prepared for the weaving process. After the baskets have been shaped and cut, they are sanded and trimmed by hand.
