Cooking
can be a dirty business. Whether you’re polishing the soil from new
potatoes, scrubbing off after getting hands-on with some pastry dough,
or scouring out a cast iron skillet, a dependable scrub brush can be an
indispensable asset in the kitchen.
Traditionally used by Native Americans to make ropes and mats, tampico fibers are harvested from the Agave lechuguilla plant
found in the Chihuahuan Desert. Once extracted from the fleshy leaves
of the agave, these hard fibers are resistant to most chemicals,
alkaline and acidic solutions, and heat. This tough, highly durable
fiber can be used on its own or in a union blend with bassine, a select,
water-resistant grade of palmyra fiber from an East Indian palm tree.
When
these fibers are stitched by hand with bronze wire into carved wooden
handles, you have a scrub brush so sturdy that the wood would have to
disintegrate before you lose a bristle. And with a surprisingly light
yet incredibly strong wood like birch used for the handle, that’s not
something you’ll have to worry about for a long, long time.
These scrubbers require no special care. The natural bristles are exceptionally durable and were chosen because they hold up even when soaked in grease and water, while their birch wood handles are hard-wearing. Giving your brush a good hard rinse immediately after use is the easiest way to keep it clean.
Produced by skilled, visually-impaired craftspeople at a Swedish workshop, the techniques used to create these brushes have remained virtually unchanged for over 120 years. Tough, natural bristles are pulled individually through a handle made from birch wood from the forests of southern Germany and the Czech Republic, resulting in a brush that can stand up to your most glorious messes.
