Fitting
snugly in the palm of the hand, this shaving bowl is made of solid
beech wood and will last a long, long time. Sturdy and beautifully
grained, the strong wood is designed simply to meet the
time-tested standards of the shave. It’s shallow for easy access
to the soap, and it will hold up in the damp environment of the
bathroom. A rounded lid keeps the soap fresh.
Shaving
is a ritual. Lathering up some fresh soap with a brush and bringing a
razor across the skin above the sink’s steam is one of the fastest ways
to feel better about the day. This compact bowl unassumingly aides in
the completion of that task and will look good on the sink and in the
cabinet.
Shaving
bowls can get a little embarrassing: unnecessary lips and molding,
decals, fancy (pointless) handles, and materials that are quick to look
grimy in the bathroom, including the odd coffee cup that’s been
repurposed for shaving use. Not this one. Layer upon layer of lacquer
has been applied and polished by hand and the curve and concave of the
bowl and lid has been hewn to open and close with ease.
Beech
wood is a strong but flexible hardwood that ages gracefully. It’s
nonporous (which is why it has a very strong surface) and odorless. It
won’t get damaged if you drop it.
Place
the soap in the bowl. Thoroughly soak the brush and shake off the
excess water. Swirl the brush for a few seconds — you only need enough
soap to cover the tips of the bristles. Work up a nice lather, adding
water if you need to, and build the lather in the bowl or on the face.
When finished, put the lid on and put the soap away for your next shave.
Clean occasionally with soap and water.
The
company that makes this bowl started with making shaving brushes in
Stützengrün, Germany, in 1945, and they have expanded over the years,
always using the best materials they can find for the job.
The lacquer is applied to each bowl meticulously, each one of them hand polished, giving the beech wood a deep, fine brilliance.
