New Zealand lamb's wool is known for its luster and high durability, and virgin wool is prized for its unique softness. The manufacturer of this blanket, which has been milling wool for 140 years, selects only the finest grades of wool from around the world and in the US, with an attention to the weaving and processing of each blanket that they still very much consider an art.
The cells of the wool fiber naturally overlap, much like the shingles of a roof, creating a tightly packed surface that keeps heat in and moisture out. Virgin wool blankets are perfect for a frosty evening - cuddle up and sip a hot cup of tea or hot chocolate. If you spill liquid on the blanket, it will repel water and be just fine. Occasional spot cleaning and/or dry cleaning is suggested from time to time.
For best results, wash virgin wool by hand in cold water with a mild detergent or baby shampoo. Fill the kitchen sink with cold water, and while the tap is running add 2 tbsp. of detergent and swish the water gently to distribute the soap. Lay the garment on top of the water and allow it to drop into the soapy solution on its own. Once the item is fully submerged, let it soak for about 15 minutes. Gently swish the blanket a few times, then remove it and set it aside.
Be careful not to twist or wring the material as this can distort the fibers. Once again, fill the sink with clear water and place the item on the top allowing it to sink down. Wait five minutes, then remove the blanket. Press down on the material to gently squeeze the water out.
Place the item on a dry towel, then roll the towel into a tight cylinder to remove any excess moisture. Unroll the towel and dry flat out of the sun.
The wool mill that manufactures these blankets is a fully vertically integrated mill, which means each step is completed in one place with help from automated machinery and quite a bit of hands-on manufacturing. The mill wastes nothing and recycles everything as part of the thought process behind their business and process. Their state of the art water processing equipment takes waste heat from their processing and pre-heats the incoming water supply through the use of heat-exchangers. This gives an estimated 93% energy re-use.
