Pewter has been recognized since the time of ancient Egyptians as a tarnish-free, non-reactive, curiously light metal, symbolic of a cultured if not a very wealthy person. For a desk tool, pewter sure does add a bit of luster to the messy monotone of strewn white papers, and makes the whole routine of opening paper bills seem more tolerable, even something to look forward to.

In Sheffield, England, a town that's been known for hundreds of years for its metalwork, this letter opener is hand forged, polished and tested for quality by the small company of pewter craftsmen.  You won't need to nurse any more paper cuts once this tool belongs to your routine.

Use & Care

Holding it firm and steady like a sword that will end the battle, slide through the top crease of the envelope.

Letter openers can be especially sharp, so be careful with the blade. Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty or give me death" speech did not end with a pretend, yet dramatic, death-by-letter-opener scene for nothing.

Production & Design

The manufacturer of this letter opener started out in 1949 as an independent pewter craftsman, making his own pieces in his own home and selling them out of his suitcase. 60 years later, his company is well known for their hundreds of pewter products that are first spun on a spinning lathe then assembled and polished by hand.

Sheffield, England gained an international reputation for steel production during the 19th century, and before that, in 1769, they revolutionized the manufacturing of pewter products to make them more quality and durable than they had ever been.
