There will always be that brave, brazen friend who insists on toting a coverless iPhone around, which they'll claim is eminently slimmer, sleeker and more pocketable. But if you're like us, you belong to the "better-to-protect" it camp. Frankly, we can't imagine a life in which our smartphones never drop once.

The iPhone 5 is a thinner, lighter, longer version of the smartphone you used to have. Instead of glass, the back is made of anodized aluminum - the same material used in Apple notebooks - with ceramic glass inlays. Unlike the 4S, the 5 is no longer prone to shattering if it hits asphalt straight-on. But it's still an expensive piece of technology, prone to chips and cracks.

The leather handmade iPhone case, like a sturdy leather bag, offers a thick, impervious cushion to prevent scratching and cracking of the phone's casing. Accidental drops, pointy pocket clutter and unforeseen flings from the table can’t shake a fist at its durable, protective powers. The case is made of a richly colored vegetable-tanned leather designed to protect without obscuring the camera or headphone jack.

Designed and manufactured just north of Tokyo and further south in Yokohama, the case features a thick woven elastic strap attached to 2 pockets, to hold the phone snugly in place. While the "commando" iPhone 5 will be a trend, the scratched casing of a careless carrier's device will not look so in vogue.

Use & Care

As with the iPhone itself, the manufacturer recommends keeping the case out of the water. The leather dye is oil-based, and is susceptible to color change over an extended period of time in heat, humidity and when left wet.

The leather will develop changes in the shape and a beautiful patina as it ages.

Production & Design

Leather Factory Roberu has been crafting leather goods using natural tannins for four years. All skins are steeped in a proprietary tanning solution using only vegetable-derived tannins. They are then dried, cut to spec, and crafted into Roberu's signature goods.
