Gin & Tonic is basically a gin highball, and a wonderfully fizzy thing to drink on the terrace on a clear evening, pleasantly weary from a day's work. This tonic, made in small batches by a pair of gin & tonic aficionados, is made of concentrated lemongrass, orange peel, sugar and quinine.
Named after the great-grandfather of the makers, Jack Rudy's tonic is a concentrated syrup, not a carbonated liquid, so it contains no fizz. Gin lovers, and all who happily raise the glass, should add half an ounce to an ounce and a half of their favorite liquor, then top it with soda water. The tonic can also be used in other cocktails as a sweetening agent.
The Gin & Tonic, by origin, came about as a medicinal beverage, meant to combat fevers, real or alleged. It became an established cocktail in the Tropical British east, then spread to the Americas by hosts who wanted to impress folk with having combed the Orient. You, too, will impress the gin & tonic lovers at your gathering with this small batch recipe that's simple, zesty and bright.
In a highball or Collins glass, pour one, or one and a half, jiggers of gin. Add half an ounce of Jack Rudy tonic. Add ice, top with soda water, stir and enjoy.
Handcrafted in the South, Jack Rudy's small batch tonic syrup was inspired by the grandfather of Jack Rudy's Tonic Co. founders - a man who was "a pilot who illegally flew his plane under the Ohio River Bridge (on a dare), an inventor who created a mechanical device for pharmacists to count pills, and a craftsman who once built a houseboat out of an old city bus. In addition to being a ‘marvelous’ dancer, he LOVED to entertain and was known to overindulge in drink, smoke, and his wife’s gourmet cooking."
