Unlike a notebook bound with paper, leather lasts forever and protects the inner pages from rain, coffee rings and spills. The leather that binds this notebook, called "Cuba Libre" is a rare, unique material, tanned with water, not chrome, in a century old tannery in the L’Aveyron region of France. It is the roughest, toughest leather in all of France and a real rarity in the world.

The interior pages are perforated, 100% undyed kraft paper, made from the pulp of virgin fibers of maritime pine - "virgin" meaning it comes from fresh sources instead of recycled waste paper. The cover and pages are - as with the paper cover Le Kraft notebooks - held together with lightweight rivets, which make for an easy refill process.

The paper in Le Kraft's notebooks is exclusively manufactured from the maritime pinelands of Gascogne, which grow 15,000 hectares per year. The growth is due to the resourceful, cyclical process Le Kraft preaches, which requires that every scrap, from by-products of maintenance (branches, tops of trees, and wood thinnings) to wood processes (sawmill wastes) be used.

For the unlined, white pages which don't come with the notebook but are available as a refill, Le Kraft partnered with Gascogne to develop a coating solution to make their white kraft paper colored as brilliantly as regular paper without creating heavy CO2 emissions. Their choice to use ozone bleaching instead of conventional scouring and bleaching is just one example of the deliberation and care they have for their raw materials, and their priority for sustainable processes. Le Kraft is not a mainstream company trying to save a buck. In fact, they call themselves “the least productive producer of notebooks in the western world.”

Use & Care

As you fill the notebook up, it's recommended to tear pages out and file them (with fewer pages, the binding bends back easier). To refill, use a flathead screwdriver (or your fingers) to unscrew the binding. Remove the used pages, file them or recycle them, and refill the notebook with fresh pages.

Production & Design

Since 1930, Le Kraft Du Compagnie has produced notebooks they claim are not meant to be practical or handy. Instead, they're made for guys with the hands of a lumberjack. They're made for bruisers.

Kraft paper is 100% biodegradable, and can be fully assimilated into its original natural environment once broken down, since the pulp is made from the long virgin fibres of maritime pine and is not bleached.

When Le Kraft does sell bleached paper (which we will sell as a refill), it's been ozone bleached, a process that uses the natural substance ozone, requiring no chemicals for the scouring and bleaching process. Ozone bleaching also cuts CO2 emissions in half compared to conventional bleaching.
