The leather is first chromium tanned, which makes it supple and durable, and then retanned with vegetable tannins — derived from tree leaves, bark, and other plant material — to allow it to patina well and to be easily shaped. It is full grain, which means it has not been sanded, buffed, or corrected in any way to remove or cover up imperfections. The leather is hand-rubbed with several coats of aniline dye and hand-glazed to give it its burnished appearance. The naturally occurring hides come from animals that were used for meat.

Each sleeve is measured and cut by hand and triple-stitched with industrial-strength, extra thick thread at each joint point for added strength.

Use & Care

Fits iPad 2 or 3, with or without Smart Cover. Flap secures with seam-integrated keeper.

Avoid getting the sleeve wet. If this does occur, pat dry right away with a soft cloth. To keep the leather supple and nourished, rub in a protective leather conditioner once or twice a year. You can also use a bit of the leather conditioner and a soft cloth to clean off surface dirt.

Production & Design

The leather for these sleeves is produced by Chicago’s Horween Leather Company, founded in 1905 and one of the oldest continuously running tanneries in the US. The leather is selected by the tannery’s head grader, a man with 40 years of experience.

In the Defy Bags studio, the sleeves are hand cut from hand-measured patterns. Only a few dozen are made at a time.
