Die
Imaginare Manufacktur mixes modern design with the traditional
craft work of the Blind Institute in Berlin, producing
items like this conical brush. Made with entirely natural bristles, the
care and craftsmanship devoted to the bottle brush by a small group of
German artisans is immediately obvious.
It
may look like a piece of art, but this little number is a highly
functional item, well-suited to a kitchen sink as much as a workshop or
lab with their tricky nooks and crannies that need to be cleaned before use.
The entwined metal handle is bendable and fine enough to get into the
tightest mechanics, and the bristles are supple yet hardy.
The bristles at the tip are horsehair — softer to scrub its way into
grooves and crevices, and the lighter bristles are cow hair, which are
stiffer to work off whatever is clinging to the inside of your bottle.

The horsehair allows for scratch-free dry cleaning, so the brush can easily be used for buffing and cleaning. It really comes into its own for safely cleaning circuit boards and small components – something any electronics workshop has to worry about. It’s durable, and can withstand temperatures of up to 370 degrees Fahrenheit.
Virtually unchanged for over 120 years, the methods used by artisans at Berlin’s Institute for the Blind originated in the Alps. Twenty skilled workers — who are either blind or disabled — pull horsehair bristles through the handle, making for a sturdier brush, far more hard-wearing than most. The workshop has capitalized on its creative originality with the aid of feted industrial designers Die Imaginare Manufacktur. Started by Hermann Weizenegger and Oliver Vogt at the turn of the 21st Century, DIM has taken the unconventional works of a small group of brushmakers and helped them receive due recognition as classics of modern design.
