Oilskin Sewing Kit

Each piece in this oilskin-wrapped set has been hand picked from a factory that supplies Savile Row, a famed street of British Tailors in England. Unlike clunky plastic sewing boxes, the set is easy to carry and store. It gently folds up and ties closed, like a wrapped-up blanket or scarf.  Originally referred to as a “Tailor’s Roll” or Hussuff, the British oilskin kit was designed with the traveling tailor or seamstress in mind.

In this set are:

25 fine hand sewing needles with assorted lengths and gauges for different types of cloth.

1 wide bow pair of scissors. The razor thin tip can snip any loose ends or for any little bump in your sewing endeavors.

1 black and white tape measure, made in Germany, that measures out 60 inches on one side and 152 centimeters on the other. Soft and pliable, but stiff enough not to get tangled.

1 box of dressmaking pins. Nickel-plated and quality assured.  Considered corrosion resistant, your pins will always stay as pretty as the dress.

Your sewing tools come sealed in a firm, strong box the manufacturer would love you to use as long as you’re still sewing.  Each box fits neatly inside its own little tailor pocket.

The Right Needle:

Knowing what fabric you are sewing will matter when choosing the right needle.  The fabric and needle must coincide.  The small, thin pins are for the more the more delicate and tightly-woven fabrics, like silk.  The long and thick ones are for heavier ones, like denim.  Remember to use a thimble for the heavier fabrics.

For the Pins:

When pinning a project, place the pin 3–4 finger-widths apart and perpendicular to the edge of the fabric to minimize warping.

Wide Bow Scissors:

Its razor thin tip is perfect for sewing, so watch those fingers!
