Southern Field Industries Tote Bag (Khaki)

Sometimes, you really need to grab a ticket, a magazine, a wallet, without your bag fighting you. That's exactly what totes were made for. Two straps. Open top with simple snap closure. No buckles, buttons, zippers. Get in there. Get in there, and get on your way.

This tote is a world apart from the regular canvas standard, the kind that comes free with a magazine subscription. Unisex and versatile, it's reinforced with a leather bottom and straps, adding a touch of beauty and sophistication to a functional design. It's useful for carrying laptop and other items to work, bringing groceries from the market, or travel.

A husband and wife team, tucked in a workshop in the hills of the Saitama region of Japan, oversee every step of the process of creating these unique bags. Previously, the pair crafted equestrian products for the racehorse industry - an industry where sturdiness and finish are essential to an acceptable product. The sturdy canvas, reinforced with soft, supple vegetable tanned cow hide leather, gives the bag a retained shape, making it easy to fill with books and set down conveniently at your side without it toppling over. The straps, which have been hand painted along the sides, are attached to the interior slash and patch pockets with solid brass rivets. 

The tote bag came about in part because it didn't require much care. So don't expect to spend too much time worrying about maintenance. Just use common sense. Like all waxed canvas, the natural development of the marks and scruffs on the canvas will become part of the character of the bag. The leather straps and bottom should maintain their luster and beauty for a lifetime. If you happen to set the bag down in a puddle, or the leather collects dirt, simply wipe it off with a damp cloth.
