This log carrier came about out of our desire to work with Steele Canvas, a New England canvas manufacturer known for their long tradition of providing American industries with sturdy, durable canvas carriers.

The canvas we chose for hauling heavy logs was 18 ounce, similar to industrial hampers used for heavy loads. The color black seemed right - logs will obviously be dirty, and black tends to hide all the scuffs so it still looks nice sitting by your fireplace. The unwaxed surface, too, makes it capable of being washed if at some point you do feel it's ready for a clean.

The suede handles were a nice touch. More comfortable, we thought, than canvas, which can sometimes feel a bit rough. Suede is comfortable to hold on to, especially when you've got to keep a good grip.

All the stitching on the caddy is done on site at the manufacturer, by hand. The handles are attached to the body of the carrier using double nylon stitching, colored black to match the canvas.

Use & Care

For the most part, this log carrier is supposed to get dirty, and stay dirty. The black canvas will help conceal a lot of the natural scuffing that will take place from the logs. But if your log carrier gets so dirty you can't stand to look at it, wait until it's dry to begin cleaning it. When dry, take the bag outside and knock off extra dirt, then wipe with a damp cloth to remove caked-on dirt. You can use a toothbrush to scrub any stains, with a mixture of water and mild detergent. Rinse with clean cool water.

Production & Design

Back in 1921 when the manufacturer started out, canvas was a relatively lightweight, accessible, economical and durable material. It was also versatile enough to be used for baskets, steaming hampers, coal bags and a variety of other products. Canvas has proven to be just as efficient handling the needs of present day industries.
