These vine charcoals are very smooth and capable of producing a wide range of effects, from subtle gray tones to deep dark shadows. These charcoals are sturdy and do not break easily. They do not leave hands extremely dirty after use and look great on paper.
Use alone or with a brush, blending stump, or eraser. Charcoal use is fast, direct, and responsive. Bold and fluid lines are possible.
The 3- to 4-mm diameter and 1/8-inch width of these charcoal sticks are extremely versatile.
Chemist Gustave Sennelier opened his art supply shop in 1887 in Paris, near the renowned École des Beaux-Arts, and while he started out selling paint made by other manufacturers, he soon became known for his own range of oil paints, which he mixed himself from pigments he gathered locally and in his travels.
Many artists have relied on Sennelier's products to create their works, including Cézanne, Gaugin, Bonnard, Soutine, Van Gogh, and Picasso, for whom Sennelier specially created pigment that could be used on any surface without need for prior preparation.
Henri Sennelier, Gustave's son, created the first oil pastel.
