Terracotta Herb Markers
Eight labels to mark where herbs have been set in the garden or to identify them in a pot. Set includes Sage, Basil, Chives, Thyme, Tarragon, Dill, Parsley and Rosemary. Made from English terracotta in Newark, England. (
Growing herbs at home is the type of small scale gardening that even stauch city dwellers can enjoy. All that’s need is a bit of natural light, soil, seeds, and a receptacle, and you’re well on your way to enjoying a fresh garnish for cocktails and home cooked meals.
Here’s the rub: all very small, green growing things tend to look an awful lot alike, even to the trained eye. If you’ve ever planted up your herb garden in a hurry only to realize you’re not entirely certain of what's sprouting, these markers will help eliminate the guesswork. In durable terracotta, they make an attractive way to help you remember whether it’s parsley, sage, rosemary or thyme (or chives) in that pot.
Use & Care
Place the appropriate stake at the end of a row or in a pot to denote which herb has been sewn where. These markers can be used again and again, season after season. Eventually, the terracotta will begin to take on a beautiful natural patina with age. If desired, the stakes can be washed by hand in warm water and allowed to dry thoroughly. They should never be placed in the dishwasher.
Production & Design
These garden markers are made using English terracotta clay. Using molds, the clay is pressed and formed into the desired shape. The raw clay is then allowed to dry, reaching a leather hardened phase. The leathered terracotta is then fired to over 1,000 degrees, which causes the water to be drawn out and the clay atoms and particles come closer together and eventually interlace, creating a strong, hard bond in a process called vitrification or partial glassification.
