Outdoor Canvas Utensil Roll
Keep campground cooking utensils, or knife sets tucked away in a 15-ounce canvas pack. 7 heavy-duty stitched pockets, cotton tie and hanging grommets. Handmade in Duluth, Minnesota. (
The utensil roll is made from olive green, heavy duty 15 ounce canvas, hand riveted with a webbed cotton wrap closure, so you can either roll up your knives and utensils into a bundle or use the rivets to hang it on a branch.
The Duluth Pack company goes back to Camille Poirier, a poor French Canadian who, in 1870, wandered West to the village of Duluth on the banks of lake Gitchi Gummi. Poirier embodied the hardscrabble hustle of the frontier. He devised the settlement’s first water system, carting hoghead barrels of water by horse-drawn carriage, while running a cobbling shop, building a house with his own hands, and making do on dinners of cow carcass seasoned with Duluth soil in place of pepper.
Duluth Pack honed their canvas and leather skills with wagon covers, blacksmith aprons, tents and cots. As the village grew to be a city filled with millionaire titans of industry, the company turned to outfitting the growing leisure class. In the 1900s, this meant tapping into the craze for 'gypsying'—taking their model-Ts out in the open road and sleeping under the stars. The utensil roll is an embodiment of the love for ruggedness and outdoors with the order and comfort of hard-won luxury.
Use & Care
The utensil packs are made to survive rugged everyday use, so there's no need to be gentle. The canvas will soften naturally with age. Canvas repels water, but it is not water-resistant. If the bag gets thoroughly soaked, be sure to dry it out completely. If needed, the canvas can be cleaned with mild detergent and water.
Straps, seams, and rivets are repaired for free under Duluth Pack's lifetime guarantee on craftsmanship. Normal wear and tear is fixed for a small fee. If something breaks or gets worn down, mail the pack to Duluth and they will let you know if the damage can be repaired under warranty. Duluth Pack still receives items for repair that are upwards of 50 and 60 years old.
Production & Design
Duluth canvas goods are made entirely by hand in Duluth, Minnesota, in the same factory since 1911 by a team of artisan cutters, sewers are riveters. Each piece of canvas is inspected for flaws before being hand-cut. The canvas is then assembled by sewers and rivets are hand-pounded or placed using a 100-year-old riveting machine. The bags are checked at each stage by specialized craftsman, then re-inspected by quality control before shipping.
The utensil roll is made with components that have withstood the test of time: softgoods made with these materials have lasted 128 years and counting. The leather and hardware are sourced from the Midwest, rivets are made in Duluth. The canvas is dyed in North Carolina and, depending on the distributor, is sourced either from within the state or from India.
