When you do something every day, you might as well enjoy it. And with the “R” seasons, cold weather and their subsequent food-centric holidays, an attractive, sturdy, versatile set of bowls is as necessary as a dozen or so bottles of wine.
Stoneware, different than earthenware, is a sturdier, chip-resistant material that moves seamlessly from the oven to the table to the dishwasher. It also has the look of handmade pottery with a texture and density that feels good and heavy. Stoneware bowls can be used for cooking and baking, as serving dishes - or even in the garden to hold your freshly uprooted fruit and veg.
The stoneware bowl is a water tight, textured piece of pottery that is oven, microwave and dishwasher safe. You can also clean it by traditional methods, with soap and water, or a dry wipe.
A 50-year-old pottery business makes these bowls on a forming press in a metal mold. They are then hand-finished, dried and glazed. All glazes are made on site, and use recipes unique to the company. All pieces are fired at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit in a process that takes about 12 hours from the time of lighting the kiln to the time the kiln is opened.
