One hole for standard pencils, and a larger hole to accommodate most other shapes and sizes. Drilled from a solid aluminum-block body. Designed and produced in Germany. (
Heavy in the hand and handsome on the desk, the Dux dual pencil sharpener performs with a German precision perfected by one of the oldest names in the industry.
The Dux aluminum sharpener is a callback to the early 20th century, when pencils were common and sharpeners were evolving from basic pencil pocketknives to elaborate crank machines and portable wedge tools. Today’s sharpeners have largely fallen to cheap plastic rectangles, quick and convenient electric boxes or the ubiquitous kid-safe hand-crank devices.
The aluminum sharpener has a flair for the old as well as a durable build for daily use. A standard-sized hole sharpens regular writing pencils to a fine, crisp point, while a large-diameter hole chisels triangular, carpenter’s and most other odd-shaped pencils. A wide opening at the end of the sharpening mechanism prevents jamming from broken tips.
Dux was the first pencil sharpener factory in Germany when it opened its doors in 1908. Striving for innovation, the founding family filed numerous patents on sharpeners during these formative years. The company maintains an elaborate and precise production process for all its sharpeners, while continuing to toy with new designs.
Twist the pencil to sharpen as done in elementary school and the shavings collect in the faceted aluminum container. Dump the shavings by unscrewing the lid like a jar, tap any danglers free from the sharpener and find an appropriate receptacle. Sadly, the sharpener limits the pencil shavings spread across the desk, thus concealing evidence of a hard day's work.
Made from a solid block of aluminum, the sharpener needs little care. Clean the container with a soft and dry tissue as with any other sharpener. The high quality blades, manufactured from hardened steel, should continue to sharpen for years, depending on how many pencils are used. Replacement strips can be purchased.
The three-piece design is simple: container, top and sharpener. The magnesium alloy sharpener is attached to the lid by two screws, a tradition from early models that adds durability and reduces wobbles while sharpening.
Both the aluminum and the brass sharpeners are designed and manufactured in Germany by the Dux company.
