All metal refillable ballpoint pen with enough ink to fill 600 sheets of paper. Smooth, clean line of black ink. Refills available. Also available in red, blue, black, silver, or red with red ink. Made in Switzerland. (
Sturdy and simply designed, this all-metal refillable pen is the understated workhorse of Caran d’Ache, a Swiss company that’s been making pens since 1924. While some of their pens can cost several thousand dollars and are bedecked with gems, pearls or gold, this metal pen — intended for the non-princes among us — is nevertheless an excellent tool. It floats on the surface of the paper. Press as lightly or firmly as you want, at nearly any angle, left hand or right, and it will still drop a smooth, crisp line.
The metal hexagonal body nestles nicely in your finger tips and the stiff clip will keep the pen gripping tightly onto your pocket. Extends and retracts noiselessly. This pen has a smooth finish and besides this white one, it's also available in blue, red, black or silver. The pens come to you with a medium point and black Caran d'Ache ink.
The opposite of disposable, the body of the Caran d'Ache pen can be refilled till the end of time. It is made entirely of metal with a push button mechanism and a retractable tip, and has the fewest moving parts possible to make breaking even less likely.
Caran d’Ache’s ballpoint cartridge is their specialty and broadly lauded by the pen-obsessed. It lasts a long, long time. There’s enough ink to fill up 600 pages of bond paper with fervent writing. The stainless steel tip and tungsten-carbide ball make a tough pair, and they deliver a clean line down to the very end. Each cartridge is laboratory-tested before being approved for sale.
Caran d'Ache black and blue ink refills are available from Kaufmann Mercantile.
The Caran d'Ache metal pen doesn't need to be polished and it doesn't need to be coddled. Tuck it in your pocket and use it freely. When the ink runs out, unscrew the push button top of the and drop in a new cartridge.
Ballpoint pens are so ubiquitous that it's easy to forget that they're a technological marvel. It took fifty years of failed design experiments before they managed to make one that worked.
Some were overly reliant on gravity and had to be held exactly vertical at all times. Others needed so much pressure to get the ink flowing that they would pierce through paper and could only write on leather. It wasn't until 1940 that an invention turned successful, and the dream of a smudgeless, long lasting ballpoint was reached.
All metal pens are made entirely at the Caran d'Ache factory in Geneva, Switzerland.
