Covered Copper Bird Feeder
Solid 16-ounce copper bird feeder. Comes with copper wire hanger. Holds 0.75 quarts (0.70 liters) or 1.125 pounds (0.5 kilograms) of bird feed. Handmade in the Blue Ridge Mountains since 2000. (
This bird feeder is handmade from solid 16 ounce, unfinished copper by a Swiss-trained metal craftsman. Together with his wife, he developed the piece’s unique curvilinear form by using cardboard paper. The twisting top acts as a baffle to protect birds and seed, and accommodates small sized birds such as chickadees and sparrows. The bottom tray features a drilled hole for drainage. It holds various types of feed, including cracked corn, fruit, mixed seed, peanut chunks, peanuts in shell, safflower seeds, sunflower kernels and sunflower seed, so you can customize the mix depending on the bird you hope to attract.
Place the bird feeder on a pole or post about four or five feet off the ground. Comes with a copper wire hanger, so it may also be hung from a tree.
Use & Care
Copper does not rust, but will build up a unique patina over time. If desired, you may polish your copper with equal parts kosher salt and ketchup to return it to its original sheen. To learn more about caring for copper, read our “References” article here: Care for Copper.
Production & Design
Husband-wife team Vasse and Peg Vaught began their copper roofing business in 1999, armed with combined experience in copper apprenticeships and architectural training programs in the U.S. and in Europe. Seeking a useful purpose for their leftover copper scraps, the couple began to make bird feeders in 2000. The gleaming copper bird feeders in architectural shapes were so popular that they have now expanded their line to include other garden and household products such as bird baths, nesting trays, flower pots, umbrella cans and more.
